The Iron Mistress: Warner Archive Blu-ray Review

In this generation when people hear the name Bowie, people think David Bowie. But long before him there was Jim Bowie. He was an American military officer and a frontiersman who died in the famous Battle of the Alamo.

In 1952 Alan Ladd would take on the role of the early years of Jim Bowie. The film was entitled The Iron Mistress. Now Warner Archive Collection have restored and released this biography on Blu-ray for the first time ever!

Synopsis: Homespun Bayou lad Jim Bowie (Alan Ladd) is learning the courtly ways of 1825 southern society. He's wearing only the finest suits and cravats. Proving himself in business and at the gaming table. And should the occasion call for it, he keeps handy the specially made blade -- tempered with meteorite steel -- that would make his name forever a part of American lore.

Director George Douglas brings the early years of Jim Bowie to life. Though to be honest this film is more soap opera than biopic. The film is
 heavily fictionalized and romanticized. Plus much of the plot and characters are invented or exaggerated for dramatic effect.

Alan Ladd plays a very believable Jim Bowie and the acting talents of Virgina Mayo (The best Years of Our Lives) and Phyliss Kirk (House of Wax) are a full and wonderful display in this feature film. While
 this is a Hollywood story instead of a true biography, it is still an entertaining piece of cinema.

Warner Archive Collection have transferred the film to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono. There are English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Warner Archive Collection didn't just throw this film on a Blu-ray... no way. They lovingly restored The Iron Mistress in 4K. The color palette of this Technicolor feature is simply gorgeous. The picture is crisp, clean and pristine and the audio is clear as a bell! There is no signs of damage on this print.

In addition to a wonderfully restored picture. Warner Archive added some cool bonus features to this Blu-ray release. Take a look at what is included on this Blu-ray disc.

Special Features:
* WB Cartoons
  - Cracked Quack (1952) Daffy Duck takes shelter from a blizzard in the home of Porky Pig.
  - Hare Lift (1952) Bank robber Yosemite Sam forces Bugs to fly the largest airplane in the world.
* Original Theatrical Trailer

The classic Warner Brothers cartoons featuring Daffy, Bugs, Porky and Yosemite Sam are always a welcomed addition to these Blu-ray releases. But in all honesty, I wish there was a bit more bonus features on this Blu-ray. I would have made this release a whole lot better.

Even though this film may not be historically accurate, the film is wonderfully entertaining. The film looks and sound spectacular in HD and would make a wonderful addition to anyone's home video library. So if you would like to add The Iron Mistress to your collection head over to
MovieZyng or Amazon and order your copy today!
