Rosa Blu-ray Review: 88 Films Revives a Martial Arts Gem

For physical media fans there is nothing like a super deluxe Blu-ray box with release. 88 Films really know how to put together wonderful releases. We have seen such great Blu-rays as Lady Assassin-, An Amorous Woman of the Tang Dynysty, Detonation! Violent Riders, Jakoman and Tetsu- and SS Experiment Love Camp.

Now it is time for another film to shine on super deluxe Blu-ray. This time 88 Films went with 1986's Hong Kong action-comedy time Rosa.

Synopsis: Two ambitious graduates of the police academy bumble their way through their first big case.  

The world of police movies was forever changed with 1984's Police Academy. The fun of bumbling cops on the big screen would be done again and again. And that is what we see here with Rosa.

Now like most bumbling cop films, some things work and other things don't. But there is a good amount of slapstick to go along with the action. Thus, making this film a fun watch, even with it's problems.

88 Films have transferred Rosa to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There are two mono audio tracks to choose from, the original Cantonese track and the English dubbed track. There are also newly translated English subtitles available.

This new transfer is not just any transfer it is taken from a new 2K scan of the original negative. The film looks and sounds simply stunning. 88 Films never ceases to amaze with how good their scan look!

In all honesty the on-disc bonus features are a bit on the skimpy side. The two audio commentaries are a nice addition. But additional interviews, retrospectives ect. would have taken this Blu-ray from good to great. But I do love the artcards, the book and the slip case.
