But arguably one of his greatest roles can be found in 1941 with "They died with their boots on". Warner Archive Collection have decided to restore and release this classic film on Blu-ray for the first time ever.
Synopsis: The 7th Cavalry Regiment, Gen. George Armstrong Custer says, rides "to hell or to glory. It depends on one's point of view." The point of view of Raoul Walsh's spectacular They Died with Their Boots On decidedly favors glory. Errol Flynn portrays the famed cavalryman in this hoof-and-thunder chronicle tracing his career from dandyish West Point plebe to Civil War hero to frontier legend immortalized by the Battle of Little Big Horn. Olivia de Havilland, sharing the marquee with Flynn for the eighth and final time, plays Custer's devoted wife, Libby. And composer Max Steiner's stirring music trumpets gallantry and sacrifice. Seventh Regiment: Charge!
Okay so yes, this film is not historically accurate! But it is extremely entertaining. The writing is great and the action pretty impressive for the 1940s. Errol Flynn really shines here as General Custer and he is joined by the great Olivia de Havilland (The Snake Pit) in one of the 8 films they made together.
In addition to these Hollywood legends the supporting cast is quite impressive as well and include, Arthur Kennedy (Death of a Salesman), Sydney Greenstreet (The Maltese Falcon), Anthony Quinn (Requiem for a Heavyweight), John Litel (Knute Rockne, All American), Regis Toomey (Meet John Doe), Joseph Crehan (Union Pacific), and Hattie McDaniel (Gone with the Wind).
Warner Archive Collection has transferred "They Died with their Boots on" in 1080p and is presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Warner Archive has done another spectacular job of restoration here with this release. The scan comes from the original camera negative. The new restoration of this picture in my humble opinion is the definition of "in glorious black and white." Warner Archive Collection didn't stop with a beautiful restoration. They added some cool bonus features. Take a look at what is included.

I thoroughly enjoy the Warner Night at the Movies. I never lived back in that time, but I heard tales from older relatives who would say how they would go to the theaters get a huge bag of popcorn, candy bar and drink and watch a newsreel, cartoons, trailers and a feature. Boy how thinks have changed. Well, with feature we can get they old theater feel right from the comfort of our living room! I love that.
