The Cat (1992) – 88 Films Limited Edition Blu-ray Review

If there is one thing that Asian filmmakers know how to do it is making unforgettable horror films. The range from supernatural horror to bloody disgusting gory horror films. Nevertheless, one thing is for sure when you finish an Asian horror film it will leave you all that soon.

In 1992 Lam Ngai Kai directed a sci-fi horror film entitled The Cat. The film was adapted from the novel Old Cat, by Ni Kuang. For the 33-year anniversary it is time for a deluxe release. And no better company to release the Blu-ray that 88 Films.

Synopsis: A cat from outer space teams up with a young alien girl and her knight, along with a novelist named Wisely, to fight an alien that possesses people.

The Cat is a mis-mash of films. When watching this film, I could help but think of the sci-fi classic The Blob and Disney's The Cat from Outer Space. The idea is a bit absurd, but that is what I think is its charm. The Cat is a cult classic. If you were a kid or teen of the 90s no doubt you saw this film and marveled at it.

The Cat is not overlayed with bad CGI it is filled with practical effect. And I will tell you for me I prefer the practical effects over CGI any day. The actors in this film play it to the hilt and the cinematography is spectacular.

88 Films has transferred The Cat to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is a remastered original Cantonese monoaural soundtrack. There are also English subtitles.

This Blu-ray transfer is not just any transfer. This comes from a brand new 2K restoration from the original negative. The picture quality is stunning. The colors are vibrant. The flesh tones are correct. The film looks sharp, and the audio is clear. This is yet another great release from 88 Films.
