Mark Twain novels have been adapted to film many times. Probably the most popular one t adapt would be The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I don't know how many times this story has been made into a feature film.
In 1931 Jackie Coogan would star as the iconic Huck Finn. If you don't know that name you probably should. Jackie Coogan in his later career would play Uncle Fester in the TV Series The Addams Family. Now the good folks at Kino Lorber have released this film on Blu-ray for the first time ever.
Synopsis: Tom Sawyer’s (Coogan) puppy love of Becky Thatcher (Green) keeps him home, while Huck Finn (Durkin), sick of “civilizing” influences like school and shoes, plans to run away. Tom and Jim (Clarence Muse, Hearts in Dixie) help him escape, and all three raft down the Mississippi, where they’re joined by two likable con men and meet pretty orphans Ella and Mary Jane (Charlotte Henry, Alice in Wonderland). The latter may change Huck’s mind about girls!
This version of Huckleberry Finn is criminally under seen. After it theatrical run and through the years it has been forgotten. Why? I don't know! It is a wonderful adaption of Twain's novel. Along with Jackie Coogan (Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid) the film has Mitzi Green (Little Orphan Annie), and Junior Durkin (Man Hunt).
The film was expertly directed by Norman Taurog (Boys Town, G.I. Blues). This film is a sequel to Paramount’s Tom Sawyer of 1930 that starred Junior Durkin. It was the top grossing film of 1930.
Kino Lorber have transferred Huckleberry Finn to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also English Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
I was thoroughly impressed with how crisp the picture looked on this transfer. The black and white picture is amazing. The whites are bright, and the blacks are dark. Kino Lorber did a wonderful job with this transfer. But with this Blu-ray that's not all that is included. Take a look at the bonus features included.
Special Features:
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian/Writer Julie Kirgo and Writer/Filmmaker Peter Hankoff
• Theatrical Trailer
This new audio commentary is truly a wonderful listen. I always enjoy listening to commentaries to gain new insight and hear other people's thoughts on films. To me these are always a great addition to the Blu-rays.
