Death Valley: The Complete First Season DVD Review – BBC’s Darkly Comic Horror Series

British television! I have been a fan ever since I first saw the classic Are You Being Served? I would go on to enjoy such shows as Keeping Up Appearances, That's My Boy, As Time Goes By and who can forget the legendary Doctor Who.

On May 25th, 2025 Paul Doolan's creation the mystery comedy "Death Valley" debuted on BBC One. But for physical media fans we have been waiting for the physical release. Well, wait no more Season One of Death Valley is now on DVD!

Synopsis
: The nation's once beloved TV detective John Chapel lives a reclusive life in the Welsh countryside -- guilt-ridden for letting his career get in the way of his final months with late wife Elin. But when his neighbour is murdered, John is dragged back into the world by detective sergeant Janie Mallowan. Struggling to rise up the ranks, she teams up with the widower. Despite their opposing instincts -- Janie's interested in procedure and building a watertight case while John's captivated by character and motives -- this could be the answer to her waning career. As long as her boss doesn't find out.

Timothy Spall and Gwyneth Keyworth are truly a new odd couple for a new generation. They play so well off of each other. It is a pleasure to see their banter. Each episode keeps you genuinely entertained with the comedy as they solve a mystery!

All six season one episodes have been transferred to DVD in 2.35:1 aspect ratio and the audio track is an English Dolby Digital 5.1. Finally, there is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. These episodes are spread across two DVD discs.

Disc One:
* Episode 1: DS Janie Mallowan solves a murder with national treasure and retired actor John Chapel.
* Episode 2: John and Janie solve the mysterious death of a walker found on a Welsh mountain trail.
* Episode 3: John and Janie disagree on how to investigate the untimely death of a best man.

Disc Two:
* Episode 4: John goes undercover at an amateur dramatics group to help Janie solve a case.
* Episode 5: John and Janie are stuck in a countryside manor after a murder mystery party goes wrong.
* Episode 6: John and Janie struggle to get along as they unravel a mystery involving Janie’s past.

In addition to all six episodes on two DVDs. The second DVD disc has special bonus featurettes included. They are,
Creating Death Valley, The Odd Couple Detective of Death Valley and Death Valley: Scripting A Whodunnit?

The episode transfers are really crisp and clean. There are no signs of digital artifacts or audio anomalies. I also love the addition of the featurettes. These take you behind the scenes of the making of this season and is a really nice bonus!

The biggest downside for me on this release is that this set is these DVDs are made-on-demand. When I am purchasing a physical media release, I want a pressed disc. Pressed disc have a much longer shelf life than that of the burned on demand ones.

All things considered this is still a wonderful release. So, if you enjoy 'whodunnits' and you love British shows as much as me. Well, Death Valley should be on your watch list. If you would like to own Death Valley Season 1 on DVD head over to Amazon and order your copy today!
