One thing is for sure you don't think of Clint Eastwood and comedy. But in 1978 Clint starred alongside an orangutang for the ultra-fun action-comedy 'Every which Way but Loose'. This film is 47 years old. It will soon be a half a century old! Hard to believe. Warner Brothers have re-released this film on Blu-ray. In case you missed it the first time around.
Synopsis: Philo Beddoe (Eastwood) is a hard-drinking trucker who has a pet orangutan named Clyde. The two have a strong friendship and often drink beers together. Beddo's mother does not approve of her son's friend Clyde. Philo, Clyde and companions head across the country to find a girl Philo is obsessed with.
There is no denying that this film is absurd, but that is the fun of it. It's getting to see Clint Eastwood in a role not taking himself too seriously. Ruth Gordon ("Harold and Maude," "Rosemary's Baby") shooting down a biker gang from her porch.
Watching this almost 50-year-old film you might think it would feel out of touch. But the dialogue still holds up and the acting is hilarious. Along with Eastwood we also get the acting talents of Beverly D'Angelo ("National Lampoon's Vacation," "Coal Miner's Daughter"), and Geoffrey Lewis (TV Sitcom Flo).
Warner Brothers have transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There are several audio options on this disc, including an English Dolby TruHD 5.1, an English Dolby Digital 5.1, French 1.0 and Spanish 1.0. There are also optional subtitles in English, French and Spanish.
Every Which Way but Loose looks really nice on Blu-ray. The picture is crisp and clean. The colors are bright and vibrant, and the audio is clear as a bell. There are no signs of damage to this print that I could see while screening this film.
There is no indication that this film has been restored for the 2010 release. So that is what leads me to believe that this is just a re-release. But if you didn't get a chance at that release, you have a second chance.
As for bonus features, there is none. That is a major disappointment. I would love to have seen a retrospective, an audio commentary, interviews, ect. That would have made this release a whole lot better. But it is just bare bones.
But Every Which Way but Loose is still a fun little experience. And seeing it in HD is definitely the way to go. Every Which way but loose is a film you will never forget. If you would like to own a copy for yourself head over to Amazon and order your copy today. You will go bananas for this adventure!
Out of 4 Film Reels (4 being the best) the Blu-ray of Every Which way but Loose receives.....
