The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) Arrow Video 4kUltraHD Review

When people think Vin Diesel they probably think Fast and Furious. But where Vin made his name was in his cult film Pitch Black. Vin Diesel's intergalactic criminal Riddick has become a sci-fi icon!

Arrow Video released Vin Diesel's Pitch Black on 4K and Blu-ray. But what about the sequel? Well, what no more, Arrow Video has now come through. The Chronicles of Riddick is now available on 4k UltraHD and Blu-ray.

Synopsis: Riddick (Diesel) is an intergalactic fugitive whose dark past catches up with him when he is lured out of hiding by Imam (Keith David, The Thing), another survivor of the planet of horrors they barely escaped from five years earlier. Now out of the shadows, Riddick is identified by an ethereal emissary (Academy Award winner Dame Judi Dench) as the descendant of an ancient race of warriors who may be the universe's last hope against the Necromongers, an evil army of fanatics intent on bending the world to their will. With enemies closing in on all sides, including the ruthless Lord Marshal (Colm Feore, Thor) and his scheming lieutenant Vaako (Karl Urban, The Boys), Riddick finds himself a reluctant savior of the cosmos, with only his razor-sharp wits and cunning killer instinct standing in the way of total annihilation.

Now as much as I enjoyed Pitch Black I always felt that The Chronicles of Riddick was a much better film. As we all know it is rare that the sequel is better than the first film. I think of Star Wars The Empire Strikes back, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, The Dark Knight, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and The Bride of Frankenstein. To Me The Chronicles of Riddick is a much stronger film. That is way it has always been favorite of the two.

Arrow Video have restored both the Theatrical and Director's cuts of this film in 4K with the approval of director David Twohy. There are audio options of
the original DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround audio on both cuts, plus remixed Dolby Atmos for the Theatrical Cut. Finally, the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing on both cuts.

Just like with Pitch Black Arrow Video has done a miraculous job in restoring this film. This is a beautiful upgrade from the previous Blu-ray release that I already owned. But gorgeous looking restoration is not all that is included in this new 3-disc deluxe set. Take a look at the bonus features included.
