When you think cartoons in the early years of television you think Hanna-Barbera. They are responsible for some of the best cartoons in history. I'm talking The Flintstones, The Yogi Bear Show, Top Cat, The Jetsons, Jonny Quest, Wacky Races, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! and The Smurfs.
Well, in 1973 Hanna-Barbera brought together Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and Robin, Aquaman some of the best superheroes together for an epic cartoon show! A version of the Justice League entitled Super Friends!
Synopsis: The greatest of the DC superheroes work together to uphold the good with the help of some young proteges. Produced by Hanna-Barbera, Super Friends is an animated TV series, featuring the Justice League of America, that ran from 1973 to 1985 on ABC as part the Saturday morning cartoon lineup.
After a short but impactful one season run new versions of the Super Friends show followed. Now to be honest here the stories told in these episodes are not the highest of quality. But you have to remember these shows were made for kids in the 70s and 80s. Shows like Yogi Bear was the normal kids cartoons. But where the lack of deep storytelling is the amazing animation takes these shows to the next level.
Warner Brothers Home Entertainment have not just released Super Friends on Blu-ray. They have scanned the whole Super Friends cartoon shows and released the episodes in this 16 disc Blu-ray set!
* Super Friends (1973) 1 season 16 episodes
* The All-New Super Friends Hour (1977) 1 season 15 episodes
* Challenge of the Super Friends (1978) 1 season 16 episodes
* The World's Greatest Super Friends (1979) 1 season 8 episodes
* Super Friends (1980-83) 3 season 22 episodes
* Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show (1984) 1 season 8 episodes
* The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians (1985-86) 1 season 8 episodes
These episodes have been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and are presented in their original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The audio is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Looking at these episodes in HD on Blu-ray in comparison to the DVD releases. These cartoons have received a very nice upgrade. The Hanna-Barbera colors really pop. These episodes are crisp and clean, and the audio is clear.
The 16 Blu-ray discs are collected in an Epik Pak tray that just sits inside the case. Now I have many TV series that have been collected this way. There is some backlash from this type of case, but my feeling this is a whole lot better of a packaging than some I have had in the past.
Now this set does include bonus features, some audio commentaries and featurettes from the previous DVD sets. Always a welcomed addition. There is also the inclusion of The Lost Episodes that were part of the 1980s Super Friends Series. I wished the episodes and bonus features would have been printed on the disc, or a booklet insert with all the episodes listed on them. It would have made it easier to find an episode you wanted. but that is really the only complaint I have, and it is a minor one.
Super Friends is from a different time. A more wholesome time. A time when good always defeated evil. This is great nostalgic viewing or showing to a whole new generation of kids the glory of classic superheroes. In this complete set, you will see all of your favorite superheroes including, The Flash, Cyborg, The Wonder Twins, Plastic Man, Green Arrow, The Atom, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Hawkman. And you will see obscure ones like, Rima the Jungle Girl, Apache Chief, Black Vulcan, Samurai, Abin Sur and El Dorado. I truly believe classic cartoons never go out of style! Such is the case with Super Friends!
So, if you enjoy the animation of Hanna-Barbera or love the DC Comics Universe. This Blu-ray set is the best of both worlds. head over to MovieZyng and order your copy, your going to love this collection.
