The Double Crossers (1976) Eureka Entertainment Blu-ray Review

America has been seeing some of the classic kung fu films coming to home video on Blu-ray in the last year or so. This has been amazing for fans of the kung fu genre of films. And I am not talkign about just Bruce Lee and Jakei Chan films. I am talking everything including classics from The Shaw Brothers.

We have seen many companies jump on this bandwagon and release cult classics of kung fu action on Blu-ray. Well, Eureka Entertainment have joined the cause and have release a unique kung fu film from 1976 entitled The Double Crossers on Blu-ray. And the best part about this release is that this film has been restored in 2k!

Synopsis
: Following his late father's murder, police officer Detective Lung (Shin) discovers that both of his parents were involved in a smuggling ring - and that his father was killed by its leader, a violent criminal now living in Hong Kong under the name Wang (Chao Hsiung, The One-Armed Swordsman). Determined to avenge his father's death, Lung resigns from the police force to take matters into his own hands. Teaming up with a smuggler who was once a close friend and partner-in-crime to his parents, Chang (Chan Sing, The Chinese Boxer), Lung heads for Hong Kong and sets about drawing Wang into a trap.

Okay so to be honest here The Double Crossers has quite a few plot holes and the action is not as great as some we have seen in other kung fu action films. But I must say I was still quite entertained with this film even with the problems. And after all that is all you can aske from a film is "entertain me".

The director Jeong Chang-hwa knows what he is doing. We have seen that with such films as, The Skyhawk, Broken Oath and King Boxer. And as I said he makes an entertaining little film here. And this is a very important film in his career as this is the second to last film he would ever make!

The Double Crossers makes it's Blu-ray debut featuring a brand new 2K restoration. Eureka has restored both the original Hong Kong theatrical cut and the original English language export cut. The options for audio the original Mandarin and optional classic English dub (Hong Kong theatrical cut). There is also the option for the classic English dub (Export version). Finally there is the option for English subtitles, newly translated for this release.

Now full honesty I have never seen this film in any format before this time so I have nothing to compare it against. But I can attest to the fact that the film looks and sound amazing for a 1970s film. The widescreen edition make this film seem more epic in scale. The picture is crisp and clean, the colors and flesh tones are correct. The audio is clear with no distortion that I could hear. Eureka really did a nice job with this restoration. But that is not all look at whst is included on this Blu-ray as bonuses.

* Brand new audio commentary on the Hong Kong theatrical version by East Asian film expert Frank Djeng (NY Asian Film Festival)

* Brand new audio commentary on the export version by action cinema experts Mike Leeder and Arne Venema
