When Worlds Collide (1951) Blu-ray Review

George Pal was an amazing producer and director. He is best known for his science fiction films. I am talking such classic films as, The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, Destination Moon and Logan's Run.

In 1951 during the sci-fi boom, George Pal produced a science fiction disaster film released by Paramount Pictures and directed by Rudolph Maté. That films was When Worlds Collide. Now Paramount Home Entertainment have released this sci-fi classic on Blu-ray.

Synopsis
: When scientists discover a distant planet is on a catastrophic collision course with Earth, the government refuses to believe the evidence. It's now up to private citizens to finance and build a spaceship to carry a limited number of people and animals to another planet to begin a new civilization. Massive tidal waves, earthquakes, the impending destruction of our world and deciding who gets to live or die brings out the best and the worst in people. This human emotional drama produced by George Pal (The War Of The Worlds), combined with Academy Award -winning special effects, make When Worlds Collide one of science-fiction's pioneering classics.

When World Collide is kind of a sci-fi retelling of the bible  story Noah's Arc. Well, maybe slightly. I remember watching this film on DVD many years ago and not being as impressed. So when I received the opportunity to see it again with this Blu-ray I jumped at the chance!

Now I learned a long time ago don't just a film by your first viewing. So seeing it again at this time, now as I am much older, I truly appreciate George Pal's production here. The story is  a big on the wordy side. Perhaps that is why as a young teen it didn't impress me as much as War of the Worlds or The Time Machine. But there is a lot of heart in this film, that I never really took hold of as a young teen. I appreciate the heart!

This sci-fi classic has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in its original full screen format. There are 4 audio options an English mono DTS-HD Master Audio, A Dutch mono Dolby Digital, a Spanish mono Dolby Digital, and a French mono Dolby Digital. For subtitles there are English, Dutch, Spanish, French, and Japanese.

This Blu-ray transfer is extremely nice. I remember the DVD looking good but nothing out of this world. Paramount's Blu-ray really brings this film to life. The colors are gorgeous and the picture is crisp and clean. The audio is clear with no signs of hiss or pops. This is a tremendous picture upgrade from the DVD!

The only things I have against this release is the lack of bonus features. We only get the Theatrical Trailer. And secondly the fact that this is a made-on-demand disc. I truly wished this was a pressed disc. The reason pressed disc have a longer shelf life. But if you take care of this disc it should last you for many many years.

When World Collide is may not be on the level with the greatest science fiction film in history, but it is a good little 50s sci-fi flick. There is something special about those 50s sci-fi films and I am glad to have When World Collide on Blu-ray as part of my sci-fi collection.

So if you love 50s sci-fi as much as I do, you need When Worlds Collide in your collection. Head over to MovieZyng and order your copy today!
