Blood and Snow (2023) Blu-ray Review

Very rarely does a remake live up to the original film. John Carpenter was tasked with directing a remake the 50s sci-fi horror classic The Thing from Another World. With a jump scare direction and terrifying creature effects Carpenter's The Thing became so popular it has passed cult status to enter just plain classic status.

This film has inspired many filmmakers over the years to make their own jump scare feature. But in 2023 Rossa McPhillips and Simon Phillps wrote their version of The Thing entitles "Blood and Snow". The director's chair was given to Jesse Palangio. Now MVD and Cleopatra Entertainment have released this horror film on DVD and Blu-ray!

Synopsis: Two scientists uncover a meteorite impact site in the Arctic tundra, but it kills one scientist and infects the other. A nearby base takes in the lone survivor whilst trying to understand what happened. The lone survivor may not be the person they think she is.

I went in to seeing this film with an open mind. While this storyline is similar to The Thing there is enough differences that you can't call it a rip-off. The acting is okay. Nothing really stands out as a tremendous performance here. However, Anne-Carolyne Binette's minimized performance as the infected scientist lends to more believability as a heartless entity.

Where this film really fails in comparison to The Thing is the lack of jump scares and creatures. It's a case of mostly talk and very little action! The terror is just not there! But the film leads us on a tense investigation. So, if you like slow burn films this one might be for you!

As a viewer discretion this film is loaded with profanity and some violence. The violence doesn't show up till the end and it is not as gory as some things seen in films, but there still is a seen or two that is a bit gross! But if you are offended by excessive amounts of profanity, you might want to skip this one!

MVD Visual have transferred this Cleopatra Entertainment film to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in widescreen format. There are two audio options a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and a LPCM 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The Blu-ray transfer is really nice. The picture is crisp and clean with absolutely no digital artifacts. The audio is clear with no hiss pops or audio anomalies. But a stellar looking Blu-ray transfer is not all that this Blu-ray has going for it! There are some additional features included on this disc.

* Trailers: Blood and Snow, The Black Mass, What The Waters Left Behind: Scars, Long Dark Trail, The Ghosts of Monday, Frost, AK Toltoy's "A Taste of Blood"

* Slide Show

One thing I love about Blu-rays are the bonus features. I do with there was more bonus features included on this disc. Interviews with the cast and director. Maybe a director's commentary. That would have been nice.

Now while I can't put this film in the same category as The Thing, it will not be without its fans. Some horror hounds are looking for their next horror movie fix and Blood and Snow will probably be the one to scratch that itch. But just don't expect Carpenter's The Thing. You going to miss the jump scares and the creature terror!

So, it you are a horror hound and want a slow burn isolation horror film. This new Blu-ray release of Blood and Snow is for you. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today!
