The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932) Warner Archive's Blu-ray Review

Boris Karloff is known for his many iconic roles in cinema history. But there is probably one that is remembered more than most, especially in this day and age for its controversial portrayal of Chinese character.

In 1932 Boris Karloff took the role of the supervillain Fu Manchu in the film The Mask of Fu Manchu. Now the good folks at Warner Archive Collection have released this pre-code film on Blu-ray in its original uncut version.

Synopsis: Boris Karloff takes one his most celebrated cinematics turn as the diabolical fiend Dr. Fu Manchu, and Myrna Loy plays his exotic daughter in this 1932 cult horror classic. This time, the evil Fu Manchu patiently awaits the discovery of Genghis Khan's tomb. For he is certain that possession of Khan's mask and sword will enable him to rule the East and lead it to victory over the hated Western world. When British scientists in the Gobi Desert discover the tomb, Fu captures and tortures them in his elaborate Torture Garden, hoping they will take him to the treasure he craves. But an unexpected traitor has other plans for the doctor. Based on Sax Rohmer's original story "The Mask of Fu Manchu" is "fast moving and humorous" (Halliwell's Film Guide) and full of pre-code suspenseful horror.

It is amazing to think this was Boris Karloff's first speaking role after gaining popularity after playing the Frankenstein monster. From one iconic role to another. Now for those that are offended by it this film is filled with racist stereotypes. But if you can look past those things you will find yourself highly entertained by this film.

Along with an amazing performance by Boris Karloff, the cast also includes, Myrna Loy (The Best Years of our lives), Lewis Stone (Andy Hardy film series), Karen Morley (Scarface), Charles Starrett (Durango Kid film series), Jean Hersholt (Heidi) and Lawrence Grant (Shanghai Express).

The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in its original 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio soundtrack is a DTS-Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Warner Archive Collection have lovingly restored this 1930s classic to amazing quality. The black and white picture is sharp, there is only a couple moments with the picture quality is a bit less than perfect. But these are so minor it is hardly worth mentioning.

ON this Blu-ray Warner Archive not only put an amazing looking film transfer, but added some very cool bonus features as well! Take a look at what is included on this Blu-ray release.
