The 1980s was such a cool time in history. The best time to be a kid. There were many films in the 80s featuring kids. Probably one of the most iconic is probably The Goonies. But in 1987 a group of friends went on an unworldly adventure to save their community and the world in the film The Monster Squad. Now Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing this film on DVD.
The Monster Squad- a group of young kids devoted to monsters, get more than they bargained for when Count Dracula adjourns to Earth, accompanied by Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolfman, the Mummy, and the Gillman. Dracula and his gang are in search of a powerful amulet that will grant them power to rule the world. Our heroes -- the Monster Squad are the only ones daring to stand in their way.
The Monster Squad is such a fun little adventure. In this generation the classic Universal monsters are not as much in the forefront of our screens as it was a few years ago. To not only see Dracula, but Frankenstein, the Wolfman, the Mummy and the Creature all together in one film is a dream come true. The monsters were designed by the great Stan Winston (Aliens), and with the you know you're getting high quality monsters.
Now director Fred Dekker (Robo Cop 3) brings a breakneck speed to this film. Running at just under 80 minutes, this fast-paced action comedy is so much fun, even with all the plot holes. The acting of these kids is so believable. They don't even seem to be acting. But there is one thing viewers should be aware of. This is a film from a different time. So, it should be noted there is some words used in the film that some viewers in this generation may find offensive. So viewer beware.
Paramount has transferred The Monster Squad to DVD in widescreen format. The audio is a 5.1 Dolby Digital. And there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The film transfer looks pretty nice for a DVD release. There was no damage to the print and no digital artifacts that I could see.
It is really awesome seeing this 80s cult classic on DVD. There are no bonus features. It would have been nice to see some bonuses, but that is a minor complaint. The major point is to have this film in physical media format. This is also a Made-On-Demand disc and not a pressed disc. Pressed discs are more durable and have a longer life expectancy. But if you store your burned disc properly, they should last a very long time.
If you love 80s cinema as much as I do, this DVD release of The Monster Squad would make a really nice addition to your collection. Head over to MovieZyng and order your copy today!
