In 2010 BS Films produced Extraordinary Measures a film inspired by the book "The Cure" by Pulitzer Prize Winning Writer Greeta Anand. Now for the 14th anniversary of the films theatrical release the film arrives to DVD thanks to the good folks at Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment.
Fate and determination push idealistic father, John Crowley (Brendan Fraser, The Mummy Trilogy) into joining forces with reclusive medical researcher, Dr. Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford, Star Wars, Indiana Jones). Together, this unlikely pair face impossible odds as they battle the entire medical establishment and time itself to find a cure before it's too late.
Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser are amazing in this film. The story is well written and directed. But it instead of feeling like a theatrical film. To me it feels like an old made-for-TV film from back in the day. And that is not exactly a bad thing as I love those old made-for-tv films. I love going back and watching those film like Brian's Song, The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, The Night Stalker and many more.
While the subject matter can be heartbreaking and depressing. Like any feel good drama, it ends on a good note. While this film is rated PG, there is a good chunk of adult language. This could have easily been a PG-13 film. With the amount of profanity in it. So, viewers beware before sitting down with the whole family on this one.
Paramount has transferred Extraordinary Measures to DVD in widescreen format. The audio is a 5.1 Dolby Digital. And there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The film transfer looks pretty nice for a DVD release. There was no damage to the print and no digital artifacts that I could see.
I really enjoy watching Harrison Ford on film and seeing him in Extraordinary Measures was another treat. This DVD release includes a nice-looking copy of the film and that's all! Sadly, there are no bonus features. I would have loved to see a trailer or interviews, but that is a minor complaint. The major point is to have this film in physical media format.
One more thing to make known is this is also a Made-On-Demand disc and not a pressed disc. Pressed discs are more durable and have a longer life expectancy. But if you store your burned disc properly, they should last a very long time.
If you love films based on true stories as much as I do, Extraordinary Measures is one film you will want to add to your collection. Head over to MovieZyng and order your copy of this DVD today!
