Blu-ray Review: Joy House (1964)

Mystery-Thriller films take the audience on a fun ride. They allow viewer to ride along a play rookie detectives. So besides watching an exciting film what could be better than that.

Now there are matter if is American films or fantastic foreign films the thrill ride still makes for a fun time. Now the good folks at Kino Lorber under the division of KL Studio are releasing the 1964 French thriller Les Félins or as it is known in America Joy House on Blu-ray.

Marc (
Alain Delon, Purple Noon) is a dashing young con man on the run from the mob. After seeking refuge in the Riviera villa of the widowed Barbara (Lola Albright, TV's Peter Gunn) and her curvaceous cousin, Melinda (Jane Fonda, Cat Ballou), Marc becomes trapped in the passionate snares of both women, who are full of sinister surprises.

Sadly this
René Clément (Forbidden Games, Is Paris Burning?, Rider on the Rain, And Hope to Die) directed thriller has been mostly lost in time. Only real hardcore film fans even know about this film. The acting is great, the story adapted from the 1954 novel of the same name makes for a thrill ride you won't soon forget after the film ends.

Kino Lorber has transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. There are audio options for both English and French language, both are presented in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Finally there is the option for English and French subtitles.

Now it would be cool to see Joy House on Blu-ray, but Kino Lorber didn't just get a copy of this film and stick it on a Blu-ray, oh no. They got a new 2K Restoration by Gaumont. The picture quality of this restoration is
c'est magnifique. But a gorgeous restoration is not all this Blu-ray has going for it! Kino Lorber added some cool bonus features.

• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historians Howard S. Berger and Nathaniel Thompson

• Trailers: Joy House, Diabolically Yours, Farewell, Friend, The Girl on a Motorcycle, The Sicilian Clan, The Widow Couderc, UN Flic, Armageddon, Coming Home, Lord Love a Duck, Rider on the Rain, And Hope to Die

• Slipcover and reversible artwork Blu-ray insert

A great looking restoration is enough for me to recommend this for thriller movie fans. But
Howard S. Berger and Nathaniel Thompson bring so much great information this is a must listen. I also love trailers and all the different artwork.

Kino Lorber gave Joy House a Blu-ray release that it probably would not have received
from any other company. It is an under appreciated film and it really deserves a chance to shine in HD. I thank Kino Lorber for giving physical media fans a chance to own this little known gem on Blu-ray.

If you love thrillers from the 1960s the new Blu-ray Joy House from Kino Lorber is a must own for your collection. Head over to
Amazon and order your copy today.

Out of 4 Film Reels (4 being the best) the Blu-ray of Joy House receives.....
