Arrow Video had released this film on Blu-ray featuring the new 4K scan. But now it's time for a true 4K Ultra HD release of this cult sci-fi classic.
After reaching the high score on the arcade game Starfighter, teenager Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) meets the game's designer, Centauri (Robert Preston) -- who reveals that he created Starfighter as a training ground for developing and recruiting actual pilots to help fight a war in space. Than young Alex is whisked away from the trailer park life to a distant alien planet, Alex struggles to use his video game-playing skills to pilot a real ship, with real lives at stake.
The Last Starfighter is an exciting out of this adventure. Some may call in unimaginative, me I personally think it is an extremely inspiring story. In the 80s teens lived at the arcades and they also loved Star Wars.... so why not do a mash-up and bring the best of both worlds to make an adventure.
Now in a time in which we see film using CGI (computer-generated Imagery) all the time. It is very interesting to note that The Last Starfighter and Disney's Tron are two of the first films to use CGI. And these two films use CGI seamlessly in the production.
The film was directed by Nick Castle. Now Nick Castle is probably most recognized for a mask he wore. He was the original Michael Myers. But in addition to acting, he also wrote screenplays as well such as Escape from New York and directed cult comedy classics Dennis the Menace and Major Payne.
Arrow Video have transferred the film in 4K (2160p) to Ultra HD Blu-ray disc. The audio is an uncompressed 2.0 stereo, 5.1 DTS-HD MA and 4.1 audio. Finally there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Now Arrow Video putting this 4K scan on a 4K disc is defiantly a substantial upgrade from the previous Blu-ray. The picture quality is more crisp and sharp as a tack. Also included on this UltraHD disc is a boatload of bonus features.
