Blu-ray Review: My Man Godfrey (1957)

In 1936 William Powell and Carole Lombard starred in one of the best screwball comedies of that decade, some may even argue that My Man Godfrey is one of the best screwball comedy of all time. I wouldn't argue against that statement.

Now in this day and age people think remakes or reboots are a this generation thing, but that is not exactly true. Film remakes have been around since almost the beginning. Even My Man Godfrey received a remake 20 years after the original's release!

In 1957 June Allyson and David Niven would take on the roles that Carole Lombard and William Powell made famous. Now the 1957 My Man Godfrey is getting a Blu-ray release thanks to the good folks at Kino Lorber under the division KL Studio Classics.

On a mad scavenger hunt, socialite Irene Bullock (June Allyson) stumbles upon grizzled street person Godfrey (David Niven, Bedtime Story) underneath an East River bridge. Claiming him as a scavenger item, Irene wins the contest. Delighted and impressed with him, the daffy heiress makes him the new family butler. As Irene succumbs to his romantic charms, Godfrey slowly wins over the entire family with his extraordinary wit and style—all except Irene’s jealous sister Cordelia (Martha Hyer, Paris Holiday).

This film was directed by Henry Koster (Flower Drum Song). The film is basically the same with only subtle differences. June Allyson and
David Niven are very good in their roles here. Now to me it is just plain unfair to compare them to Carole Lombard and William Powell. While the roles are literally the same these are their specific take on those roles. So to me it deserves a chance to be watched without being compared! The film runs 92 minutes and is a fast moving 92 minutes.

Kino Lorber have transferred My Man Godfrey to Blu-ray in 1080p the aspect ratio is a 2.35:1. The soundtrack is a DTS-HD 2.0 and there is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. But the biggest and best part of this transfer is that this is from a brand new 2K Master.

This transfer is simply gorgeous. The colors are so bright they literally pop off the screen. The picture quality is crisp and sharp. There is no signs of damage to this print. The audio is clean with no hiss or pops. This is a remarkable looking 2K master. But a gorgeous transfer is not all that is included here. Kino Lorber added some cool bonuses. Take a look at what is included.
