The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1936)

The Man Who could Work Miracles DVD Cover
H.G. Wells is known for writing some of the best sci-fi novels in history. Yes I am talking about The Magic Shop, First Men in the Moon, The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Invisible Man, The Time Machine and War of the World.

In 1898 H.G. Wells published a short story entitled The Man who could Work Miracles in The Illustrated London News. It carried the subtitle "A Pantoum in Prose". Like many of his stories this was made into a movie in 1936. Now Cheezy Flicks have released this film on DVD and Digital Download.

When a group of celestial beings find themselves bored they decide to amuse themselves by giving an ordinary man the power to work miracles just to see what he will do with it. George, a draper's assistant, is suddenly endowed with the power to work miracles, but when he still can't win the love of Ada, he slowly begins to realize that he has omnipotence over everything except the human mind. Soon others become aware of his power and it seems that everyone can think of ways to use his gift to their own advantage.

The Man who could work miracles is a delightful, funny family fantasy film. Lothar Mendes directs this H.G Wells adaption and does a fine job. He might be best known for directing the star studded classic "If I had a Million". The acting is pretty good with some familiar faces that classic films fans will instantly recognize. I am talking,
Roland Young (Topper), Ralph Richardson (The Fallen Idol), Edward Chapman (A Stitch in Time), Ernest Thesiger (Bride of Frankenstein), George Zucco (My Favorite Blonde) and George Sanders (Rebecca).

Cheezy Flicks presents this classic film on DVD and digital download. The film is presented in it's original full screen format and looks pretty nice, for what it is. The film has sadly not seen a restoration of the picture via 2k or 4k scan. Hopefully someday this will happen. But until now this is a good way to experience this H.G. Wells film adaption.

While not wildly received when first released, it has over the years become a classic. As happens with many films. If you need proof of that just look at Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life. Take a look at the Cheezy Movies trailer below:

The Man Who Could Work Miracles is not the greatest Wells film adaption. The film might get a bit slow at times, but all in all it is an entertaining film. And when you think of film that is all that is all you can truly ask for, entertainment.

If you would like to own a copy of this film for yourself, you can order a DVD of this film by heading over to Amazon or the digital download for a mere $3 at CheezyMovies.com.
