The Winds of Autumn (1976) {Reel Vault DVD Review}

There are few who's face is synonymous with a genre of films. You may not known the name, but you defiantly know the face. Jack Elam is most known for his distinguishing physical quality was his misaligned eye. Of course I'm talking about Jack Elam. Now while Jack Elam played in other roles during his career he is most known for his time in the westerns.

In 1976 Elam starred in the Charles Bryant Pierce (The Legend of Boggy Creek and The Town That Dreaded Sundown) written and directed western The Winds of Autumn. Now the good folks at Reel Vault are giving this movie a DVD release.

When a good-hearted Quaker family allows a family of outlaws to take refuge, their kindness is rewarded with bloodshed and only the family's 11-year-old son, Joel, escapes the massacre. Bent on revenge, Joel takes weapons from a neighbor and sets out across the wilderness - set on a mission to exact his own justice by hunting down the murderers and avenge his family.

When I think of Charles Bryant Pierce I think Legend of Boggy Creek. So going into this film I was thinking this was going to be an extremely low budget western, with not the best of performances. But along with Jack Elam (Support your local Sheriff, Support you local Gunfighter) there was Jack Pine (The Miracle Worker, V: The Final Battle), Jeannette Nolan (Macbeth, Durty Sally) and Dub Taylor (Major Dundee, Back to the Future III). Everyone does a great job.

This is a low budget western, but surprisingly this film is very, very good. The film has a very "True Grit" feel to it! And when you put the film in the category that is some high praise. And it is a well deserved high praise at that.

Reel Vault has transferred this western to DVD in widescreen format and the soundtrack is a 2.0 audio. This transfer is really gorgeous. The picture is sharp, the colors are vibrant and there is no signs of damage to this print and the audio is as clear as a bell. The only downside to this release is there is no bonus features.

I have always enjoyed watching Jack Elam on film and The Winds of Autumn is no different. I am so glad I had the opportunity to see this film thanks to the good folks and Reel Vault. And to have it on a physical media release like this, simply awesome.

If you love westerns and Jack Elam The Winds of Autumn would make a great addition to your collection. Head over to Deep Discount and order a copy for yourself or a friend.
