The Blood Beast Terror (1968) {KL Studio Classics Blu-ray Review}

British horror films are simply classic. The best of course being the Hammer Horror catalogue. One the the staple actors of the British horror genre was Peter Cushing. He was in such great films as The Curse of Frankenstein, The Mummy and my personal favorite The Horror of Dracula.

In 1968 he would take the lead in the low budget horror film entitled The Blood Beast Terror, Now the good folks at Kino Lorber under their label KL Studio Classics are giving this cult horror classic a Blu-ray release, complete with a 2K Scan.

Detective Inspector Quennell (Peter Cushing) is sent to the English Countryside to investigate mysterious deaths. He consults entomology professor Mallinger (Robert Flemyng, The Horrible Dr. Hichcock), but the doctor seems to be hiding a dark secret about his fetching young daughter, Clare (Wanda Ventham, Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter). The deeper Quennell digs into their story, the bloodier the violence, until he discovers a terrifying truth about Mallinger’s experiments.

The Blood Beast Terror is a B monster movie. The acting is a tad hit and miss here, with the exception being Peter Cushing himself. The story is the typical monster movie tale. This being a 1960s monster movie, the director Vernon Sewell (The Crimson Cult, Burke & Hare) made a great call of not showing the monster too much. He adopted the "less is more" process to making this film.

Kino Lorber has transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p in 1.66:1 aspect ratio. The transfer is from the 2013 2K restoration. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
I must say that this 2k restoration looks and sounds terrific.

Now a terrific looking restoration is not all that is included on this Blu-ray. Kino Lorber added a very insightful new
Audio Commentary by Novelist/Critic Kim Newman and Writer/Editor Stephen Jones and the theatrical trailer. In addition to that there is a slipcover and reversible artwork on the Blu-ray insert.

The Blood Beast Terror is far from the best of the British monster movies, but fans of cult monster movies or Peter Cushing will want to add this Blu-ray to their collection. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
