1973 was an amazing year for films. There was the sci-fi classic Soylent Green, horror classic The Exorcist, The Sting, American Graffiti, Papillion, Magnum Force, Westworld just to name a few.
With so many iconic films most other films in this year fall by the wayside and didn't get as much love as they should have. One such film was Baxter!
The film follows Roger Baxter (Scott Jacoby), a young boy unable to overcome a speech impediment. He is disturbed by the constant bickering of his parents. When they get divorced, he slides into an emotional breakdown.
The film was adapted from the 1968 novel The Boy who could make himself disappear, by Reginald Rose, Reginald was best known for writing Twelve Angry Men. The film was expertly directed by Golden Globe award nominated actor Lionel Jefferies.
The film stars Scott Jacoby. Now that name may not seem like a house hold name, but no doubt you have seen him. He played Stan and Dorothy's son Michael Zbornak on The Golden Girls, Peter Van Daan in The TV movie The Diary of Anne Frank. He also starred in the TV movie Bad Ronald. In additions to these he also guest starred on shows like The Rookies, Marcus Welby M.D., Trapper John M.D. and Murder She Wrote.
Baxter a human drama that explores mental illness, social and family issues. The acting is pretty good, but with the subject matter the film can be a bit heavy. Also the film does contain some adult language so parents be aware of that before showing this to the whole family. For me I love a good drama so to me I am glad I had the opportunity to see this film.
Now the good folks at Reel Vault have transferred this film to Made-On-Demand DVD the film is presented in it's original widescreen format and the audio is a 2.0 mono audio. The film transfer looks amazing for a film that is almost 50 years old. The colors are bright and there is little to no signs of damage to this print.
The only downside that I can really see in this release is there is no bonus features. But that is a very minor complaint. For me I am just glad that this films has it's chance for a home video release.
If you love 70s cinema as much as I do Baxter is going to be a film you are going to want to add to your collection. Head over to Amazon or Deep Discount and order your copy today.
Out of 4 film reels (4 being the best) Reel Vault's DVD release of Baxter receives..
