Made-for-TV movie. I love them so much. I have watched many of them over the years of course most of those aired before I was born so I had to watch them on DVD.
One such TV movie aired in 1977 and most memorably had Suzanne Somers in it. Suzanne gained a lot of attention as Chrissy Snow in Three's Company so that is why she was given the opportunity to star in Ants aka It Happened At Lakewood Manor.
Now 45 years after it's original airing Kino Lorber is giving this made-for-TV movie a chance to shine on Blu-ray, and I couldn't be happier.
People come to the luxurious Lakewood Manor for one reason, to enjoy the beauty of nature. But soon the visitors find that the mountain resort has been overrun by flesh-eating ants. There is no safe space. No place to hide. Especially when these killer ants eat toxic insecticides, they don’t die—they just get meaner.
Now while Ants may not be the greatest TV movie, it is a very entertaining film. I remember watching this many years ago and now watching it again all these years later it still makes my skin crawl. And that make this film one that stands the test of time.
Joining Suzanne Somers in this TV movie is a pretty impressive cast including; Robert Foxworth (The Black Marble), Lynda Day George (TV’s Fear No Evil), Bernie Casey (TV’s The Martian Chronicles), Barry Van Dyke (TV’s Diagnosis Murder), Steve Franken (The Party), Karen Lamm (Trackdown) and Brian Dennehy (F/X) with a special appearance by celluloid great Myrna Loy (Love Me Tonight). Directed by TV veteran Robert Scheerer (TV’s Kolchak: The Night Stalker).
Ants swarms onto Blu-ray thanks to Kino Lorber. Included on this disc are two versions of this film. The 1.85 widescreen and 1.33 full frame aspect ratios, but both are in 1080p high-def transfers, taken from a new 2K master. The soundtrack in a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Seeing this film in HD in this brand new 2K scan in comparison to the previous DVD release, to say this an upgrade is an understatement. The picture is crisp and the colors are vibrant. The audio is clear as a bell. There is only very minor specs. This is a tremendous looking and sounding Blu-ray transfer. But two amazing looking versions of this film is not all that is included on this Blu-ray. Kino Lorber added some amazing bonuses to this Blu-ray take a look at what is included.
