Assault on Precinct 13 (2005) {Mill Creek Entertainment Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

John Carpenter films have gained cult status over the years. One of those film is 1976 Assault on Precinct 13. Than almost 30 years later director Jean-François Richet helmed the gargantuan task of remaking the cult classic in 2005's Assault on Precinct 13.

The good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment are giving fans of this film a chance to own this remake on Blu-ray.

It's New Year’s Eve and a police station that’s about to be closed for good, Officer Jake Roenik must cobble together a force made up of cops and criminals to defend the station from corrupt cops looking to kill mobster Marion Bishop and everyone else inside the station in order to cover their tracks.

It is a daunting task to remake a 'classic'. Very rarely, if ever does the remake ever live up to the original. One thing this film had that the original didn't was the star power. There were so many stars in this film including,
Laurence Fishburne (Apocalypse Now), John Leguizamo (Spawn), Anna (Aisha Hinds (Godzilla King of the Monsters) Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight), Maria Bello (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor), Jeffrey "Ja Rule" Atkins (The Fast and The Furious), Drea de Matteo (The Sopranos) and Brian Dennehy (First Blood).

Now with all of John Carpenter's films Assault on Precinct 13 had a good chunk of adult language and violence. Now when the remake was made the writer decided to pump up the volume on both of these to the extreme. So if profanity bothers you may want to skip this one.

Assault on Precinct 13 arrives on Mill Creek Entertainment Blu-ray. The film has been transferred in 1080p in it's original theatrical 2.40 widescreen aspect ratio. The soundtrack is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Looking at this transfer it is a clean one! The picture is crisp with only very minor specs. The colors are not vibrant, as this films is made dark side because of the heaviness of the story. The audio is clear and transports you right on the front line of the action.

Now for this Blu-ray Mill Creek Entertainment added the trailer. I do know that previous releases had a lot of bonus features. I am not sure why these bonuses were not ported over onto this release. That would have made this release a lot more desirable.
