Golden Earrings (1947) {KL Studio Classics Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Ray Milland in 1945 starred in his Oscar award winning performance of The Lost Weekend. Directly after his win of the best actor Oscar he starred alongside a polarizing actress Marlene Dietrich in a comedy-drama that takes place in World War II. This was 1947's The Golden Earrings.

Now the great folks at Kino Lorber under the division of KL Studio Classics have giving this film a Blu-ray release that fans of Milland and Dietrich are going to love to add to their collections.

The film follows a British colonel Ralph Denistoun (Ray Milland) who has escaped from the Nazis imprisonment. His cell mate arrange to meet in Stuttgart to steal Hitler’s poison gas formula. While on the way, Denistoun meets a gypsy woman named Lydia (Dietrich). She disguises him as a gypsy complete with golden earrings to keep him safe until his mission is complete.

This film is based on a novel by Jolán Földes and directed by Mitchell Leisen. The story is one that can be a bit hard to believe. It could easily have been a action adventure romance film, but instead it is played as a comedy. But on the other side of the coun makes for an interesting film if you are on the mood for it.

There is a lot of stereotypes in this film which may or may not be a problem for certain viewers.
Marlene Dietrich is amazing in her role in this film, Ray Milland is great as well although I felt a bit uncomfortable with his character.

The Golden Earrings has been transferred in 1080p and presented in the aspect ratio of 1.37:1  The soundtrack is English 2.0 Mono DTS-High Definition Master Audio. English SDH subtitles are an available option.

The black and white picture transfer is very sharp and the audio is crystal clear. Now there
 is some minor imperfections in the picture, but they are minor. Most will not even notice the imperfections unless you are looking for them.

Now let's take a look at the special features added on this Blu-ray disc.
