Superman and The Mole Men (1951) {Cheesy Movies DVD Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

The Man of Steel is widely regarded as the first superhero. He has been portrayed in comic books, TV, cartoon, serials, movies, musicals and more.

George Reeves was for many people their first introduction to Superman in his TV Series The Adventures of Superman. In 1951 George Reeves and Phyllis Coates starred as Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the first feature film of the character.

The good folks at Cheezy Movies have given this classic superhero talk a DVD release. Let's take a look what this film looks like on DVD.

The film follows reporters Clark Kent and Lois Lane arrive in the small town to report on the drilling of the world's deepest oil well. The drill penetrated the underground home of a race of mole people. These mole people arrive at the surface world at night. The mole people glow in the dark and this scares the townsfolk. So afraid are they that they who form a mob intent on killing the strange people. It's up to Superman to prevent this tragedy from occuring.

This film runs 58 minutes. Now many will say that is not a full length feature film, but in the 1950s that was considered full length. The action is just what you remember from the TV series and George Reeves and Phyllis Coates have tremendous on screen chemistry. Finally the make-up is pretty good for 1950s.

The film has been transferred in it's original full screen format with a Dolby digital 2.0 sound track. I must say I am highly impressed with this transfer the film looks and sounds great. There is no real damage to this print. The picture is crisp and the audio is clear.

Now Cheezy Movies added a gallery of trailers of other Cheezy Movie releases including, the Captain Marvel the serial, the comedy Viva Max! and Super Van.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie again after many years. I think it holds up rather well and is a fast-paced film that will entertain young and old alike.
