The new Dune movie is scheduled for release in October of 2021. Now is the perfect time to revisit the original 1984 film. So what better to experience this film or introduce a younger audience to the original than with a brand new deluxe Arrow Video 4K release.
In 1984 David Lynch wrote a screenplay based on the Frank Herbert novel Dune. Than directed his vision of this epic story with the help of production company Dino De Laurentiis Corporation.
The film takes place in the year 10191. The most valuable spice in the universe is called melange. It is only found on the desert planet Arrakis. A royal decree awards Arrakis to Duke Leto Atreides and ousts his bitter enemies, the Harkonnens. But the Harkonnens won't except that decree and so that battle is on for control of the planet and the spice contained therein.
Dune boasts a pretty impressive cast including Patrick Stewart, Kyle MacLachlan, Sting, Kenneth McMillian, Brad Douriff, Francesca Annis, Virginia Madsen, Linda Hunt and José Ferrer. The film is a pretty spectacular cinematic experience. The effect and sets are something to behold. But a novel like Frank Herbert's really should be told in a trilogy to get the full story.
David Lynch had to try a squeeze an epic story into a runtime of well over 2 hours the film. And what results is a story that feels messy, tedious and a bit choppy. Even David Lynch himself was unhappy with the film, Wanting to distance himself from the production. But over the years it has become a cult classic.
Arrow Video did a brand new 4K scan of the original camera negative. And it's presented in 4K (216p) UltraHD and the High Definition (1080p) Blu-ray. The Audio is an uncompressed stereo audio and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 Surround Sound. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This scan is something truly remarkable. The picture is crisp and colors are extremely vibrant and the audio is clear as a bell. Arrow Video did a masterful job on this scan.
But an absolutely remarkable 4K scan of this cult classic is not where this release ends. Not by a long shot. Arrow Video loaded up this release with tons of bonus features as well. Take a look at what is included in this set.
