Revenge of the Devil Bat {Alpha New Cinema DVD Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Bela Lugosi was an icon of horror. After his iconic role as Dracula, he found it hard to shake that role. People just couldn't see or hear him without thinking Dracula. So he was forced to play in many B-horror films. One of them was 1940s The Devil Bat.

The Devil Bat has become a cult classic for movie fans. Cinematographer and director Ted Moehring wrote and directed a "modern day sequel" to the Bela cult classic The Devil Bat. Now Alpha Home Entertainment under the division "Alpha New Cinema" has released this movie on made-on-demand DVD.

The film follows the grandson of the scientist Dr. Paul Carruthers who bred a giant murderous bat to take revenge. His deranged has returned to the small town of Heathville to continue his grandfather's work. He recreates the special perfume that enrages the bat to attack anyone who wears it. Will anyone be able to end this Devil Bat reign of terror? You will have to see the film to find out.

For those that have seen The Devil Bat realize the campiness that is in that film. That is what makes the film so much fun to watch. The cast and crew of this sequel did their best to keep the campy pedal to the medal, complete with robotic stiff bat flying in on wires. I must say I am glad they made this film in black and white as it feel more like a real sequel to the Bela Lugosi classic.

There is a lot of familiar faces in this b movie. They include;
Conrad Brooks (Plan 9 From Outer Space). George Stover (Desperate Living). Dick Dyszel (TV horror host "Count Gore de Vol), Rochelle Davis (The Crow), Scream Queens Tina Krause and Ruby LaRocca and Kris Yeaworth is the son of Irvin Yeaworth, director of The Blob (1958) and 4D Man (1959).

Now Revenge of the Devil Bat is not for the average horror film fan. They will not find it entertaining! This film is for fans of B horror movies. They are looking for the campy and off the wall fun, and they will find it is this one! The acting is what you would expect, plastic at times and trying to hard at other times.

As for the objectionable material, there is very little! The blood is minimal and the profanity is minor. Most movie fans will find this film very clean.

As for the Made-On-Demand DVD release. The film is presented in widescreen format and in English Dolby Digital 2.0. It looks and sounds pretty nice in black and white. As a special bonus there is trailers for two other
Ted Moehring movies, "Bloodbath in the house of knives" and "Invasion of the Reptoids". It is light in the bonus features area.

All in all Revenge of the Devil Bat is a fun, crazy, off-the-wall sci-fi horror tale that will have B movie fans craving more. I am proud to display this next to my copy of The Devil Bat.

If you would like to add Revenge of the Devil Bat to your B-Movie collection you can get your DVD copy here. Also Alpha Video has released a very awesome 11" x 17'" poster you can pick up one of those here.
