Shogun's Joy Of Torture (Blu-ray Review)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Arrow Video brings something for every film fan. From comedy to horror, action to scifi, classic to exploitation. They have something for everyone. That is why I highly recommend checking out their catalogue at ArrowVideo.com.

Now for exploitation movie fans Arrow Video has released a Blu-ray of a Japanese exploitation anthology film entitled Shogun's Joy of Torture. This is one Blu-ray that will have fans of this genre ordering, but what about other movie fans. Is this a release non exploitation fans would want to add to their collection? Let's find out!

Joy of Torture is an anthology movie 3 short tales woven into one full length feature. The first tale sees the beautiful Mitsu (Masumi Tachibana) going to horrifying lengths to tend to her older brother Shinz (Teruo Yoshida), a carpenter injured in a work accident.

In the second, passions in a Buddhist nunnery are not allowed to go unpunished after abbess Reih (Yukie Kagawa) and her attendant Rintoku (Naomi Shiraishi) encounter a virile young monk from a neighboring temple.

Than in the final part, a sadistic torturer (Fumio Watanabe) attempts to show a tattoo artist (Asao Koike) how to depict convincing expressions of faces of pain in his work by allowing him to sketch a selection of Europeans as they are tortured for entering Japan with the aim of spreading Christianity.

There is no doubt to the stunning cinematography. But there is also no doubt that this film is a hard one to sit through. The torture scenes are just intense and could be hard to sit through. This is a film for specific niche audiences only!

The film is presented in 2.35:1 High Definition (1080p) with original uncompressed mono PCM audio. There is also English subtitles. It is a stunning looking transfer. But Arrow Video went above and beyond and added a lot of cool bonus features to this Blu-ray. Let's take a look.

  • Audio commentary by Japanese cinema expert Tom Mes
  • Teruo Ishii: Erotic-Grotesque Maestro an exclusively newly filmed interview with the author Patrick Macias
  • Bind, Torture, Thrill author and critic Jasper Sharp discusses the history of torture in Japanese exploitation cinema
  • Original trailer
  • Image gallery
  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Jacob Phillips

These exploitation films are not this reviewer's cup of tea. I just don't enjoy them! But I know they are not without their fans. So no doubt Shogun's Joy of Torture was on some fan's wish list. Now that wish has been granted.

With the stunning new transfer and the loaded Blu-ray filled with bonus feature this is one Blu-ray exploitation fans are going to want to add to their collection. But for regular film fans this would probably be a pass.
