Reviewed By Jason Lockard

It is known as the National Pastime. Kids play it on the sandlots dreaming of the big leagues. Now with with the 2021 season just about to start in less than a month on April 1st. Now is the perfect time to get prepared with some baseball fun.

Warner Archive Collection has released on Blu-ray a film that brings the best of the major leagues of baseball and the world of music. Yes that's right, I am taking about the Broadway hit that was made into a motion picture, 1958's Damn Yankees.

The film follows Joe Boyd, an aging Washington Senators fan, would give anything to see the Senators to beat the New York Yankees and win the pennant. And I do mean anything. Well, Suddenly a mysterious 'gentlemen' Mr. Applegate (Ray Walston) offers to give Boyd the chance of a lifetime to be Joe Hardy, a great long ball hitter and lead his favorite team to win the pennant! And all this in exchange for a mere price of his soul.

Soon Applegate realizes he has left a loophole in the contract and he needs help so he enlists the services of sultry and seductive Lola. Will Mr. Applegate and Lola's plan work or will Joe escape with his soul? Well, you'll have to see the film to find out.

This is a classic tale with a musical spin. The cast is absolutely a stunning one with Tab Hunter is great as the innocent young Joe. Gwen Verdon stellar as the vamp Lola and Ray Walston is delightfully evil as Mr. Applegate. And it so cool to see Edith Bunker Mrs. Jean Stapleton herself in this film.

The music included in this film is toe tapping to say the least. You are bound to have some of the songs stuck in your head after viewing this film. The songs include; "Six Months out of Every Year", "Goodbye Old Girl", "Heart", "Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, Mo", "There's Something About An Empty Chair", "Whatever Lola Wants", "Those Were the Good Old Days", "Who's Got the Pain", "Two Lost Souls". This is an entertaining and fun musical!

Damn Yankees, Tab Hunter, Gwen Verdon, musical, Bluray,

Damn Yankees is presented in widescreen format 1.85:1 and the audio is DTS-HD mono 2.0. The picture is clean and the colors are beautiful. As for the audio the score and the voices clear without no distortion. This Blu-ray presentation is a thing of beauty!

Warner Archive added English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing which is always a nice bonus. Than there is also the US and UK Versions of the theatrical trailer. They also make a song selection tab, a way to jump to your favorite song in the film.

I have to say that I am always excited to see what Warner Archive does with a classic film on Blu-ray. They put a lot of love into the Blu-ray production and Damn Yankees is no different. The quality is so amazing and I have to say the Damn Yankees Blu-ray is a Home Run.
