Dark Intruder (Blu-ray Review)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

When you say the name Leslie Nielsen most film fans would think that's the comedian from the Naked Gun films, or the spoof comedies like Spy hard, Wrongfully Accused of Dracula Dead and loving it. But before his later genius comedy career, he was a brilliant dramatic actor.

In the 50s through the 70s he acted in such films as Forbidden Planet, Ransom and The Poseidon Adventure. In 1965 Leslie Nielsen starred in horror film Dark Intruder.
Now the good folks at Kino Lorber is giving this 60's black and white horror film a Blu-ray release that Leslie Nielsen fans are going to want to add to their collections.

The film follows Brett Kingsford (Nielsen) an occult expert who is brought in by police to help solve a series of murders in which a mystical statue is left at each crime scene. He soon discovers a mysterious connection between the victims.

Dark Intruder runs a mere 59 minutes. Now why is this film so short you may ask! Well, simply put it was a horror TV Pilot entitled The Black Cloak produced by Alfred Hitchcock's television company. But upon viewing this pilot it was deemed to scary for TV. So the producers renamed it Dark Intruder and released theatrically.

This pilot film is so well made! Leslie Nielsen really carries this film with an amazingly believable supporting cast. This would have made a great TV series. This could have been Kolchak the Night Stalker before that series.

As for the film's Blu-ray transfer, the film has been remastered in 2K. It is presented in 1.66:1 aspect ratio and in 1080p. The audio is DTS-HD Master Audio English 1553 kbps 2.0. The film looks exceptional on Blu-ray. The picture looks glorious in black and white the blacks are deep dark and the white and brilliant. As for the audio crisp and clean. This is one impressive transfer.

Kino Lorber didn't spot with a fantastic transfer of this film for the blu-ray release... oh no! That added some cool bonus features to this disc. Take a Look!

-NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian/Screenwriter Gary Gerani

I have to say I was really impressed with this Blu-ray. Kino Lorber really went all out with this release. Fans of Leslie Nielsen, 60s TV, Alfred Hitchcock, or horror TV are going to want to add this absolutely beautiful Blu-ray to their collection.
