Southland Tales (Blu-ray Review)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Dwayne Johnson went from the most electrifying man in sport entertainment to the biggest action stars in all of Hollywood. But it all started with some roles that were let's say not Oscar winning films.

In 2001 Dwayne made his film debut in sci-fi / horror sequel The Mummy Returns. In just a short 5 years he made 6 additional films and writer/director Richard Kelly (Known for his film Donny Darko) cast Johnson in his film Southland Tales. Arrow Video brings something for all film fans now gives this cult film a special edition Blu-ray release.

With the United States under the threat of nuclear attack, the lives of several people converge in a dystopian Los Angeles. Movie star Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson) plans his next film with the help of ambitious porn actress Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and troubled policeman Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott). Meanwhile, Marxist revolutionaries, greedy corporations and secretive government agencies pursue their separate agendas among a paranoid populace.

Richard Kelly likes to make films that make you say 'what have I just watched'. All you have to do is watch Donny Darko one time and you know that. But Southland Tales takes the same road. I don't think you can truly know what Southland Tales is all about in one viewing!

The cast is tremendous Joining Dwayne is Seann William Scott, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mandy Moore, Justin Timberlake and a special appearance by Kevin Smith among many other recognizable stars. But a tremendous cast can't help a confusing script. Also it is good to note there is a lot of adult situations, language and violence.

I don't want to come off like I am disparaging this film.Because I know there are people who love it! And I am sure there are going to be plenty of people who will watch this and think it is a masterpiece. Just right now I am not sold on it!

The film has been restored in 2K by Arrow Films in a
approved by director Richard Kelly and director of photography Steven Poster. The film is presented in 1080p with both presentations  the 145-minute theatrical cut and the 160-minute Cannes cut , which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006. The audio is the original lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and PCM 2.0 stereo soundtracks. The new transfer looks and sounds impressive. The colors are eye catching and the audio is clear as a bell.

Niw with all Arrow Video releases they load up the disc with tons of bonuses to keep film fans entertained. Take a look at what is included in this Blu-ray set.
