Kino Lorber Blu-ray Review: Rock Hudson Collection

Roy Harold Scherer Jr. better known by film fans as Rock Hudson was known by most people for his successful string of romantic comedies co-starring Doris Day: Pillow Talk (1959), Lover Come Back (1961), and Send Me No Flowers (1964). But he was much more than just a Hollywood Heartthrob.

Rock Hudson was an Academy Award nominated dramatic actor. He starred in iconic films like Magnificent Obsession and Giant. He even joined John Wayne in a western in The Undefeated. He had real range as an actor and it is a real shame that people sometime forget that.

Well, the great folks at Kino Lorber Studio Classics are delivering Rock Hudson fans a great Blu-ray box set, complete with a good genre mix of Rock Hudson films. Let's take a look at what is included in this set.

Seminole (1953)
Cavalry Lieutenant Lance Caldwell (Hudson) remembers when he was send to Fort King in Florida to serve under Major Harlan Degan (Richard Carlson), who wants to rid the area of the Native American Seminole tribe. ***



The Golden Blade (1953)

This film is based on the Arabic fairy tales of One Thousand and One Nights. In this one Basra merchant Harun Al-Rashid (Hudson) uses the magic sword of Damascus to avenge his father's murder and free a princess (Piper Laurie) from a grand vizier and his son (Gene Evans). ***




Bengal Brigade (1954)
The film is s
et during British India 1857, Captain Clayboune (Hudson) who is in love with a colonel's daughter is faced with restoring his reputation after being harshly disciplined for disobeying orders. ***


Each of these films get their own dedicated Blu-ray. The films are presented in 1920x1080p with Seminole and The Golden Blade in their original full screen while Bengal Brigade is in it's original widescreen. The Blu-ray transfers look amazing the colors are vibrant and there is no signs of damage to the prints.

As for bonuses Kino Lorber has given us theatrical trailers for each of these films. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. And finally there is an audio commentary by Film Critic Nick Pinkerton on the Blu-ray Seminole and an audio commentary by film historian Phillipa Berry on The Bengal Brigade Blu-ray.

Earlier this year Kino Lorber released an amazing collection of films dedicated to Cary Grant. Well, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has done it again bringing classic cinema fans another awesome collection of classics with this Rock Hudson collection.

After many years making film Rock Hudson grew tired of the scripts he was being offered and moved to Television in the series McMillian and Wife and Dynasty. Tragically he died of AIDs on
October 2, 1985 he was only 59.
