Review: Of Human Bondage

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

In 1915 W. Somerset Maugham wrote what most people believe is his masterpiece when he penned the novel, Of Human Bondage. It took less than twenty years for Hollywood to take this novel and bring it to the big screen.

Of Human Bondage would star soon to be Hollywood legends Leslie Howard and Betty Davis in the lead roles. The film took audiences on a roller coaster ride of emotion and heartbreak.

Kino Lorber known for restoring classics to the best quality possible gave this film the love it truly deserves. cleaning it up and making it look better than it has in years.

The film follows the life and love of Philip Carey (Howard) an art student who is told by his teacher that he lacks talent, decides to leave Paris and return home to London and pursue becoming a doctor. In a chance meeting he falls in love with a cold and promiscuous waitress named Mildred Rogers (Betty Davis). But there love just may destroy them both.

Leslie Howard and Betty Davis are prefect in these roles. While some may call this film depressing! I consider the film a real study of human emotion. And while 'Of Human Bondage' was remade two times once in 1946 and the other in 1964. In my humble opinion this is still the best version.

Now for the Kino Lorber restoration. First off the
film is presented in the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio and the English mono 2.0 audio track. The film looks and sounds great to me. I have seen many copies of this film on DVD and streaming, yet Kino Lorber's version is light years ahead in quality.

In this day an age of streaming content, it is great to see Kino Lorber bringing their brand of amazing restored classic films to the masses. Kino Now streaming service is available on computers, Android and Apple devices, Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV.

So if you want to see the best quality version of this film that I have seen so far. I highly suggest heading over to KinoNow.com and rent or own this film. If you are a fan of physical media you can get this restored classic on DVD or Blu-ray from KinoLorber.com.

Out of 4 film reels (4 being the best) Kino Now's Streaming release of Of Human Bondage receives....
