June 20th 2020 was the 45th anniversary of a film that gave a lot of people reason to stay away from the water. Of course we are talking about Steven Spielberg's Jaws.
On Amity Island in a small New England tourist town a young woman is killed by a shark. Police chief Martin Brody
(Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but the mayor overrules him, fearing the loss of revenue will destroy the town. So the Police Chief joins forces with Ichthyologist Matt
Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and ship captain Quint in a encounter of man versus beast where only one species will survive.
Adapted from the Peter Benchley novel released a year prior. Jaw was a box office smash. With a budget of 9 Million dollars. The film brought in $407.7 million. Not a bad profit at all for 1975. Not a bad profit for even now.
Because of the success of the film, producers decided to bring back the shark, or another one like it anyway. 3 sequels follows Jaws 2 (1978), Jaws 3-D (1983) and Jaws: The Revenge (1987). While all three films made a profit, most people agree Jaws 2 to be the strongest of the films.
Probably what makes this film such a horrifying one. Is that any one of us could face a man eating shark just by taking a swim. That is scary. That's why this film still give us nightmares after all these years.
So were you a fan of Jaws? Did you enjoy the sequels? Let us know in the comments. We would love to hear your thoughts.
