Inferno of Torture

Arrow Video, Exploitation, Bluray

Exploitation films are very popular with some film fans. An
exploitation film is a film that makes money by exploiting current trends, niche genres, or lurid content. Exploitation films are "B movies".

Arrow Video gives many of these films the big Blu-ray releases that cult film fans love so much. The next one of these film to get this type of release is Inferno of Torture.

The film follows Yumi (Yumika Katayama) who is unable to repay a local lender. So she agrees to serve as a geisha for two years while she repays the debt and gaining her freedom afterwards. All seems normal at first, but soon she realizes that this is less a house of geishas. It is an extremely cruel brothel specializing in providing western visitors with tattooed Asian woman to fulfill fantasies.

Yumi is taken under the wing of one of the leading tattoo artists vying for a coveted spot in the Shogun's good graces through his work, Yumi's body becomes a battleground as a rival artist becomes determined not to lose his spot at the top. When the madam, Otatsu (Mieko Fujimoto) trains her eye on the blossoming relationship between the benevolent artist Horihide (Teruo Yoshida) and his model, she makes sure than her stay is less than hospitable.

The screenplay was a very strong one that didn't need to rely on the exploitation angle in my opinion. There was a great cinematography and an very exciting lengthy
chase scene in a crowded bazaar.

While this is an interesting Japanese film, this is not by any means for all audiences. The film is filled with nudity and extreme violence. This is only for cult movie fans. It is very adult and can be hard to watch for the subject matter.

As for the Blu-ray release the film has been transferred in High Definition and uncompressed mono Japanese audio. There is also an option for English subtitles. The film looks and sounds stunning. The colors are bright, the palette is true eye candy. But a tremendous copy of this film isn't all that is included. Not by a longshot. No way. There is some good bonus features. Let's take a look.

  • Audio commentary by Japanese Cinema expert Tom Mes
  • Erotic Grotesque Nonsense & the Foundations of Japan s Cult Counterculture - a condensed version of Jasper Sharp's Miskatonic Institute lecture
  • Trailer
  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly-commissioned artwork by Jacob Phillips
  • First Pressing Only: Collector's Booklet featuring new writing on the film by Chris D.

  • So this release is for a very niche audience, but those that do enjoy exploitation films will find this Blu-ray to be a beautiful addition to their collection.

So if you interested in adding this Blu-ray to your library. Head over to MVDShop.com or Amazon.com and pre-order your copy today.

    * This Blu-ray will be released on July 7th.
