Clay Pigeon

Telly Savalas. Many people know him as ultra-hip the lollypop eating New York Police Detective Lieutenant Kojack in the 70's TV series. But before he would star in the role he would be known for. In 1971 he starred in the action-drama Clay Pigeons.

The film has never seen a DVD or Blu-ray release. That is until now! Thanks to the great folks at MVD Visual Clay Pigeon is finding a home on DVD. Let's take a look at this DVD release.

Clay Pigeon follows a Vietnam War veteran (Tom Stern) has been using illegal drugs, but eventually decides that he wants to escape that life. But before he can leave it behind, an FBI narcotics agent (Savalas) recruits him to go undercover in Los Angeles to help expose other ex-soldiers who are involved in drug dealing and drug kingpin Neilson.

Clay Pigeon has a pretty amazing cast including; Robert Vaughn, John Marley, Burgess Meredith and Ivan Dixon. But sadly the script doesn't have much meat on it! A lot of the scenes feel as though it is just padding to make this into a feature-length film. Telly Savalas is good though as he is in everything he does. He puts everything he has into any roles he takes.

The film is historically significant as it was the first film to shine a light on the issues that Vietnam veterans would encounter after returning home. While the film is not an amazing piece of cinema is a historical piece of cinema and deserves to be given the home video release.

I feel MVD Visual should be commended for giving this film a chance to live on DVD. There are a lot of Telly Savalas and b-movie fans that have been no doubt hope for this one to come to DVD and now that wait is over!

The DVD release is a bare bones one. There is no bonus features. Which is a bit sad. The film itself is presented in full screen format and in 2.0 mono audio. There is some damage to the film print and a couple of seconds of picture drops-out. Also there is no end credits, the film just stops. But you do get the whole film so there is no worries there.

While I believe that some bonus features would have made this release a whole lot more amazing, this is still a historical film and deserves to be given a home video release. For film historians and fans of Telly Savalas this will be a must-add to their video library.
