Reviewed By Jason LockardIn 2014 Timothy Spall took the role of eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner in the biopic Mr. Turner. Well, just a short 5 years later he would pick up the brushes once again. This time he plays painter LS Lowry.
Mrs. Lowry and Son premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on 30 June 2019. It was released in the UK on 30 August 2019. Then in the US on November 1, 2019. Now it is available on DVD from Cleopatra Entertainment and MVD Visual.
The film tells the story of the beloved British artist L. S. Lowry who lived with his overbearing mother, Elizabeth, until her death in 1939. Elizabeth was bed-ridden and bitter. Laurance Stephen Lowry worked to pay off the debts left by his father, being his mother's caregiver and painting in his spare time. Throughout years of her life she tries to discourage him from pursuing his art, while continuing to tell him how disappointed she is in him.
The film takes place in the years Lowry takes care of his invalid mother. We see some interesting flashbacks, but I think it would have been more interesting to explore the past as well as the 'present'. But the story is good. And Venessa Redgrave and Timothy Spall do a tremendous job in the claustrophobic confines of the little room. We see real emotion and real heart. The film is an emotional roller coaster ride.
As for the DVD the film is presented in widescreen format and available in Dolby Digital 2.0 or 5.1 audio. The film looks and sounds amazing. As for the bonus features included on this disc are interviews with Timothy Spall, Director Adrain Noble, Jenny Beavan & Lauren Reyhani of costume design, Catrin Meredydd of Production design. A special look at Laurence Stephen Lowery: Behind the man. Behind the scenes features, and Score Recording behind the scenes. Also, there is a slideshow and Mrs. Lowery and Son trailer along with an additional trailer from other Cleopatra Entertainment releases.
