The Thing (2011) {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

When you talk horror films and do a list of most people's favorite films, no doubt you will hear John Carpenter's The Thing. The Original film idea was produced in the 1951 as The Thing from Another World. Well, in 2011 a prequel film to the iconic Carpenter movie was released under the name The Thing.

Now the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment is giving all horror fans a chance to own this "Prequel" on Blu-ray.

The film starts with some researchers who
discover an alien ship buried in the ice. When paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) hears of the find she joins the team at the isolated Arctic outpost to investigate. What she finds an organism that appears to have perished in the crash eons ago.

The creature now freed from the ice is about to awake and go on an attack. As the crew around trapped in an enclosed environment paranoia spreads. Who will survive? Will anyone survive? You'll have to check out the Blu-ray to find out.

The film more or less received negative reviews. As I watched film for the first time, I went into seeing this movie not expecting much.
Now director Matthijs Van Heijningen and writer Eric Heisserer are insistent on telling a story that had been told before. But it was not a bad take. All the actors did a fine job with their roles and the direction was good. And for fans of gore there is a good amount.

While this film has huge shoes to fill and it no matter how good a film it could be it is always going to be compared to a loose to John Carpenter's cult classic. I think there is a good amount of entertainment in this new horror film.

Now for the Blu-ray itself. The film has been transferred in HD in widescreen format and in
2.40:1 aspect ratio the audio is in DTS-HD 5.1. Then there is an option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The transfer looks stunning on this Blu-ray.

As for bonus features; There is an audio commentary with director Matthijs van Heijningen and producer Eric Newman, featurettes, The Thing Evolves and Fire and Ice, deleted and extended scenes and the original trailer.

With all the bonus features I would call this Blu-ray a definite must add for any horror movie fan. If you would like to add The Thing to your collection this Bluray is a great choice. Head over to www.MillCreekEnt.com or your local Blu-ray provider and pick up your copy today.
