The Golden Head (1964) {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

The film The Golden Head had a limited theater run and since that brief run the film has gone l
argely unseen. As far as in America after the the film theatrical release the film was almost never shown.

So it seemed destiny that The Golden Head would never get a home video release. Enter Flicker Alley and Cinerama Inc. They have decided to give this family friendly adventure a release it deserves, with a Blu-ray DVD combo release.

The film follows the children of British inspector Stevenson who is in Hungary for an international convention of criminal investigators.
Milly, Michael, and Harold stumble upon a plot by two thieves (Buddy Hackett and George Sanders), to steal the golden bust of Saint László from the Cathedral of Gyór and smuggle it out of the country. The Stevenson trio trails the thieves through Budapest which takes he viewer on a tour of the landmarks of Hungary.

While the story may be a bit simplistic and geared for a younger audiences. It's not without charm so the whole family can enjoy it. The acting of Buddy Hackett and George Sanders is really worth the whole price if the film for me. The cinematography of the chase scenes is very well done.

Now as for this film transfer, the film it has been restored and remastered by David Strohmaier. It is presented in simulated Smilebox curved screen. B
ack in 2008 with the release of Warner’s How The West Won Blu-ray, Smilebox, was a 3D mapping system which recreated the 146 degree curved screen of the three-strip Cinerama process. You can see samples of the smilebox presentation in the trailer below. The restoration is a stunning piece of work.

Now a beautifully restored version of this film would be enough for most film fans. But Flicker Alley went above and beyond and loaded this Blu-Ray DVD combo Special Features. Let's take a look at what is included.

  • Fortress of Peace - A short film directed by John Fernhout, portraying the Swiss Army fighting against an unnamed, unseen enemy which originally screened theatrically in front of The Golden Head.
  • A Tale of Old Whiff - Originally in Smell-O-Vision, a 70mm cartoon where a dog, named "Old Whiff", searches for a dinosaur bone.
  • Restoration of The Golden Head - A featurette narrated by David Strohmaier about the new restoration of this Cinerama title.
  • Restoration of the animation, A Tale of Old Whiff - A featurette narrated by David Strohmaier about the restoration of this animated classic.
  • Image Gallery - Featuring original production, exhibition and promotional materials.
  • Trailer Gallery - Featuring restored Cinerama titles.

  • Now if that isn't enough this release comes with a special collector's book, with bios, information about the places used in the film and so much more. And for the Blu-ray cover itself, on the flip side there is a scene with Buddy Hackett and George Sanders. This is one amazing little release.

    So If you love Buddy Hackett, George Sanders or rare films, I highly recommend The Golden Head release. This one would be right up your alley, Flicker Alley that is! Head over to FlickerAlley.com or Amazon.com and pick up your copy today.
