The Bishop's Wife (1947)

There are some films that have become part of my Christmas tradition!  Every year enjoying certain cinematic experiences. One of the classics I love to weatch every single year is Cary Grant, David Niven and Loretta Young in The Bishop's Wife.

The film follows Bishop Henry Brougham, who desires to build of a new cathedral, but can’t raise to money and prays for divine guidance. He thinks his prayer has been answered when a suave angel named Dudley shows up. However, the angel’s mission is not to help with the construction of the cathedral. Henry has become obsessed with the building and neglected his familial. His wife Judy is unhappy with her marriage. Can Dudley put these two’s marriage back on track? you’ll have to watch the film to find out.

The story is crafted so well! There is no lows in the story at all! The cast is stellar! Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven have a perfect kind of chemistry in this triangle. The supporting cast is a perfect accompaniment to this trio of Hollywood heavyweights. The standouts are Monty Woolley and James Gleason.

After watching this film it would be hard to imagine anyone else in these roles. Yet it is amazing to note that David Niven was originally cast as the angel. And Cary Grant and Loretta Young were the second choices for parts in this film.

The film won the Academy Award for Best sound, and was nominated for Best Director, Best film editing, best music, scoring of a dramatic or comedy picture and best Picture. The American Film Institute.

This is a sweet and charming Christmas film. While it was remade as The Preacher's Wife, nothing can compare to the original! So if you have never seen this one I highly recommend it! You can purchase a copy on Blu-ray and DVD from Amazon.com.
