Our world has began to be inundated with comic book movies and TV
shows. Infinity War brought all the major superheroes together to fight one powerful Villain Thanos!
Captain America is and always has been one of my favorite heroes! I love Steve Roger's story. In the 1970s The Incredible Hulk TV series was extremely popular. So at the end of the 70s Captain America took to TV screens in an attempt to bring another superhero to series. CBS aired two pilot movies loosely (and I do mean loosely)
based on the character Captain America starring Reb Brown.
A few years ago Shout Factory released these two pilot movies on DVD. Let's take a look at this release!
Our Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An Ok way to spend an evening.
*=You haven’t missed anything.
Captain America (1979) Former Marine Steve Rogers is in an accident, his only hope for
recovery is an injection of the FLAG super-serum - created years ago by
his own father - which enhances each of his senses, as well as gives him
great strength and fast reflexes. He uses his newly acquired skills to help him bring his attackers
to justice. **
Captain America II: Death Too Soon (1979) Captain America returns to carry on the legacy of his father and defend
the country. Now he faces off his greatest foe to date a terrorist
known as Miguel (Christopher Lee) and the threat of a chemical agent that rapidly
ages those who come in contact with it. **
The stories by screenwriters Don Ingalls and Wilton Schiller changed Steve Rogers' back story that made him such an enduring character in the Marvel Universe. You almost wonder if they ever even read a Captain America comic book.
Now I am not saying these are bad films, these two films a entertaining enough, it's just I wished they would have stayed more to the core of who Steve Rogers is! And what is with the costume it was a bit cheezy looking! I have to say Reb Brown has a very calm demeanor in the role of Steve Rogers. I liked that a lot. Than there is Christopher Lee as the terrorist Miguel, well, it's Christopher Lee he is good and anything he does.
Now for the DVD itself. The two TV movies are housed on one DVD. The films are presented in their original full screen format. You might think two films on 1 DVD would suffer in quality, but they actually look and sound stunning when you release the age of these films. There is no bonus features, but 2 films on one collection is more than enough to call this a buy for me.
So if you love Captain America or Superhero films as much as I do you are going to want to see one of the first live action incarnations (not the first) of Cap ever! Head over to Shoutfactory.com and pick up a copy for yourself!
