I Met My Love Again (1938)

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Henry Fonda cemented his place in Hollywood with amazing performances in such films as, The grapes of wrath, War and peace, 12 angry men, The ox-bow incident, Mister Roberts and The wrong man just to name a few. In 1938 just 3 short years after his on screen debut, Henry Fonda would star in a melodrama entitled, I Met my love again.

This film also known as Carelessly, would go to theaters but was not overly well received. It didn't make a profit. In fact it lost $64,104. But before you say oh this is a bad film, It's a wonderful life was a box office failure and it became an all time classic. I met my love again has all but been forgotten, until now! ClassicFlix.com has rescued this film and is giving it a DVD release that it deserves.

The film follows college students Ives Towner (Henry Fonda) and Julie Weir (Joan Bennett) they plan of getting married after they graduate. Julie is tired of waiting for her life to begin When she meets writer Michael Shaw she marries him. They move to Paris where he doesn't write he just spends all their savings on parties. Until one tragic night when Micheal is killed at a party.

Julie struggles to make ends meet in Paris for herself and her little daughter, but to no avail. She finally accepts a generous invitation from her Aunt to return to America where Ives still lives. Ives hasn't been sitting back all this time he is now involved with another beautiful lady! Will this be a happily ever after fairy tale? You'll have to see the film to find out!

The screenplay written by David Hertz is based on the novel Summer Lightning by Allene Corliss. While not a true adaption it is a good one it take the story and make it it's own. Henry Fonda and Joan Bennett are great as the two young lovers, but the supporting cast shine in this film.

The film is presented in its original 1.37:1 theatrical aspect ratio and the audio is a Dolby Digital 2.0 sound mix. The film looks and sounds good in my opinion. There is some small imperfections in the picture and their is a slight hiss that is evident. But these are very minor problems. There are no bonus features, but having this all but forgotten little film on DVD now! Is more than enough for any real cinema fan.

So if you love Golden Age of Hollywood films as much as I do! If you love Henry Fonda or Joan Bennett, this release is an absolute must add to your collection. Head over to ClassicFlix.com and pick up your copy today.
