Sci-fi Cartoon Classics Volume 8 {DVD Review}

Reviewed by Jason S. Lockard

People have loved science fiction probably since the dawn of mankind! Thinking about what is out there other than just here on this Earth intrigues us! It was the same with children of the 60s. So thus came the cartoon TV adventures of Scott McCloud code name Space-Angel.

The good folks at Alpha Video have been releasing these cartoons in volume format on DVD! Now comes the next installment of adventures with Volume 8. Let's take a look at what is included in this collection.

Our Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An Ok way to spend 22 minutes.
*=You haven’t missed anything.

Space War: The galaxy is on the brink of war because of attacks from a secret asteroid base. ***

There goes Danny: An atomic bomb is accidentally launched by a slow-witted sanitation worker. **

Dragon Fire: The Starduster crew investigates reports of dragons on the Moon. ***

Flight of the Hotshots: Six green space cadets are the only defense against an invading alien fleet. ***

Space Angel was produced in Syncro-Vox an animation technique where the actors mouths were filmed and than superimposed onto the still images. This wasn't the first series done like this now the first was Clutch Cargo. The episodes were short serialized and 5 parts ran a complete story arc.

As far as the artwork for Space Angel goes this is stellar work as the majority of it was created by comic legend Alex Toth. Than there is the music of Space Angel created by composers William Loose and Fred Steiner that was featured in films such as Teenagers from Outer Space, The Killer Shrews, and, Night of the Living Dead.

Some people complain that the Syncro-Vox doesn't work or it's too cheesy, but I think that is some of the charm of these old cartoons. But as I alluded to before the artwork of Alex Toth is a major plus! It looks so retro and so sci-fi and even stands up to anything today! The voice actor put there all into these roles and it shows.

The audio and video quality of the episodes on this set are clear quality there is some minor specks in the picture but nothing that should detract from the artwork! All in all this is a very nice little peek into the world of sci-fi cartoons of the 60s.

So if you have nostalgia for old 60s sci-fi TV this is a good add to your collection head over to Oldies.com and pick up your copy today.
