Terror of Frankenstein (1977)

Reviewed By Jason S. Lockard

Mary Shelley's story of Frankenstein is iconic. It still haunts our nightmares. Perhaps that's why filmmakers remake it over and over and over. The story never gets old. Alpha Video has released a DVD of a version of the classic tale from 1977 entitled Terror of Frankenstein.

This film was an Irish-Swedish production directed by Calvin Floyd. Many films claim to be a faithful adaption of Shelley’s novel, but this film can honestly claim it and it is true.

The film follows a Victor Frankenstein who is enthralled with the idea of life. He decides to create life with disastrous results. The films time frame is just over 90 minutes, thus several subplots, most prominently the framing of Justine for William’s murder had to be cut.

Leon Vitali is a passable Victor and Per Oscarsson as the monster looks like a zombie. He speaks like a literate man with a horrible Swedish accent. The costumes and sets transport you beautifully back to that time period.

Some things we've come to expect like big machinery gory violence and exciting chases are not apart of this adaption. So it may not be as much of a thrill ride as other films. But that doesn't mean it is not an enjoyable film. I enjoyed the film for the characters play that it is.

The audio and video quality of the film on this DVD is really good when you think the film is over 40 years old. it is presented in full screen. And the bonus features include trailers of other films, In the search of Dracula, The Lonely Woman and The Scavengers.

So if your a fans of classic horror or Frankenstein, this film is a must add to your collection. Head over to Oldies.com and pick up your copy today.
