The Love Wanga (1936) {DVD Review}

Reviewed By Jason S. Lockard

Zombie! They are all the rage! In TV, movies, comics and video games. The first appearance on the dead rising from the grave was in the film Ounga or as it is known on the Alpha Video release The Love Wanga.

The films takes place in Haiti where a black female plantation owner Clelie Gordon is spurned by her white lover. She wants to get married he refuses because of her race. This does not set well with her and she is out for revenge and conducts a voodoo ritual that raises the recently dead from their graves. But will the zombies be satisfied with one victim?

This film was very controversial for its time dealing with interracial relationships! It was a different time! The film clocks in at about an hour long and is a very fast paced story. The great Fredi Washington plays the beautiful plantation owner and look out for the great Sheldon Leonard who brought us such iconic shows as The Dick Van Dyke show, The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle USMC and others.

The film presented on this DVD has some issues in the picture and the audio, but that is because of the age of the film not the DVD release! I don't know if a print of this film exists that it could ever be better than it looks here. I'm just not sure.

This film is a piece of cinema history and need to be on any cinema fanatics' shelf.
