Topper (1937) {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason S. Lockard

As I am writing this review the scariest month of the year is upon us. Halloween is a time for movies about ghosts and monsters. Well, The Sprocket Vault has released a Blu-ray of the classic comedy film from Hal Roach entitled Topper and it's all about two ghosts! Let's take a look at this release!

The film follows a stuffed-shirt banker named Cosmo Topper (Love that name by the way.)! Topper is stuck in the humdrum rut of life, but that is all about to change. Enter George and Marian Kirby, a couple who were killed in an automobile accident. Now instead of going to their reward, the two fun loving and wacky ghosts are stuck on Earth until the preform a good deed. They decided they must bring some fun and excitement to the ridged banker's life. The result is a fun-filled romp for the viewer and mayhem for the everyday life of Topper.

The cast of this film includes the legendary Cary Grant along with Constance Bennett as the Kirby's and Roland Young is remarkable as the conservative yet hilarious character Topper. You also we see special appearances by gossip columnist Hedda Hopper and American composer and bandleader Hoagy Carmichael.

This film is a must see for all classic film lovers and even Cary Grant fans. This is the film that made Cary Grant a star. Without this film who knows if we would have got the classic portrayals from Grant. It all started here. In addition Topper helped breath new life into Constance Bennett's career. She would go on to star in many more screwball comedies.

Many may remember the 1980's film 'Beetlejuice', while not a remake it has a similar premise. A young ghost couple killed in an auto accident tries to help a family! Still Topper is a cinema classic and considered so funny it had to be included in AFI's Top 100 funniest films.

The blu-ray of Topper is an amazing transfer of this film. It is in full screen black and white, with English subtitles. But that's not all! As a special bonus feature we get the theatrical trailer.

I am so glad the Sprocket Vault has given us a Blu-ray of this must have classic comedy! I can not put into words the excitement I had when I opened the package and saw this classic on blu-ray! This film is a part of our cinematic history and I am glad it finally got a Blu-ray release.

So if your a fan of Cary Grant, screwball comedies or just classic cinema this is an absolute must add to your collection! So I highly suggest you head over to www.amazon.com and pick up your copy today, you won't be disappointed!
