Night of the living dead 50th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray Review)

Reviewed Jason S. Lockard

It is hard to believe that we are coming up on the 50 year anniversary of the late George A. Romero’s horror classic "Night of the Living Dead". Romero's film is the film that invented what we know as zombies. Before this classic, zombies were not the flesh eating living dead. They were more the mindless drones of voodoo priests. That all changed in 1968 and we have Romero's classic to thank for that. Now for the 50th anniversary Mill Creek Entertainment has released this horror classic on Blu-ray.

The film takes place in rural Pennsylvania, out of the clear blue the dead begin climbing from their graves. A young lady named Barbra (Judith O’Dea) after watching her brother Johnny being killed by one of the living dead, she takes off with the zombie in tow. She finds herself at an abandoned farmhouse. There she and African-American man named Ben (Duane Jones) take refuge. They soon find out there are 5 others in the house. Tensions rise as they barricade themselves inside in hopes of surviving the coming zombie attacks.

As we look at this film now 50 years later we can see hidden meanings in the story! We also see how brave was it to cast an African-American actor as the lead! Now the interesting thing is Romero and his staff was not looking to be political or brave they were just looking for the best story and actors. Sometime things just come together like a puzzle. As I watched this movie yet again. I realized that it still works 50 years later. The zombies are still terrifying! The film still give you a sense of claustrophobia. And then ending is still poignant even today!

Now let's take a look at the Blu-ray release. The transfer of this classic movie is not perfect by any means. There are some imperfections in the film itself, but it is in 1080p high definition and the audio is an uncompressed 2.0 mono! So you can watch it on your Blu-ray player and on the big screen TV. Yes it has black bars on the sides of the picture, but the There is also English subtitles. That is it for the Blu-ray itself! This Blu-ray in my opinion is an upgrade from all the cheap bargain DVD releases you'll find out there!

For horror movie fans George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead is a classic and a must own and as far as I know this is the only US Blu-ray release of this film. Is it perfect? No! But it is an upgrade from the DVD releases and I'll take that! So if you love Night of the living dead and want to see the terror on Blu-ray this Halloween or anytime of the year! This is for you! Head over to Amazon.com and pick up a copy for yourself.
