Author Jules Verne is best known for his stories Journey to the center of the earth, Twenty thousand leagues under the sea, around the world in 80 days. He is known sometimes as 'the father of science fiction', but Jules Verne's writing went beyond sci-fi! The fine folks at Sprocket Vault bring us a less known Jules Verne film 1937's Soldier and the Lady.
The films is based on Verne's story Michael Strogoff. The film takes place during a rebellion in Russia, Czar Alexander II sends soldier Michael Strogoff 2,000 miles away, with a critical message for Grand Duke Vladimir. While on the journey, Michael befriends a lady traveler and runs into a mysterious spy. Both of these ladies unexpectedly aid him in his quest.
This has all the ear marks of classic film written all over it. Good story, actors and cinematography. It's not Citizen Kane, but let's be honest no film is! But Soldier and the Lady is a fun and entertaining ride.
On this DVD not only do you get a beautifully restored copy of the film but as a great bonus feature you get production note about the film history of the story. This for a film lover like me is a great addition to this DVD.
