88 Films have been building a tremendous catalogue of The Shaw Brothers Blu-rays. Even though we are very early in 2025 we have seen some great Blu-rays this year. We have seen Love and Crime and The Lady Assassin. Now it is time for another Blu-ray release.
In 1983 The Shaw Brothers brought Lau Kar-leung in to write and direct a kung-fu film that featured a strong female lead in The Lady is The Boss. The film is now celebrating it's 22nd anniversary and so it is time it receives a Blu-ray release.
Synopsis: A culture-clash comedy - with kung fu! A thoroughly Americanised young woman (Kara Hui, The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter) returns to Hong Kong to visit the martial arts school founded by her father and shakes it up with some trendy new ideas. But not everyone is keen on her innovations, a lesson she'll have to learn the hard way.
This kung-fu action film was directed by and starring the great Lau Kar-leung (The Shadow Boxing). The Lady is the Boss is a wonderful action comedy. It will literally surprise you how entertaining this film is. I went into this film thinking, "this will be fun", but was blown away by how much fun it truly was.
The film is fun throughout, but the payoff is at the end. The gymnasium fight scene is epic, lengthy and totally awesome. Sitting through the film to get to this epic ending will be worth waiting for.
88 Films has transferred The Lady is The Boss to Blu-ray in High Definition (1080p) Presentation in 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio. The audio track is a 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio Cantonese Soundtrack with newly translated English Subtitles. The film transfer is sharp, and the colors really pop off the screen. But 88 Films added some great bonus features to this Blu-ray release. Take a look at what is included.
* Audio Commentary by Frank Djeng
* Sam Ho on Lau Kar-leung by Fred Ambroisine
* Still Gallery
* Trailer
* Slipcase with brand new artwork from Lucas Peverill
* Reversible sleeve featuring original Hong Kong art
* Double-sided foldout poster
The addition of an insightful audio commentary and interview is great. But what I am always impressed with these 88 Films Blu-ray releases is the spectacular artwork. From the reversible Blu-ray insert, slipcover and the huge double-sided poster. The artwork is a huge plus for this Blu-ray!
The Lady is The Boss is another great addition to the 88 Films Catalogue, and even more so this will make a great addition to your Shaw Brothers Blu-ray library. Head over to MVD Shop or Amazon and order your copy today!
